10 Tips for Dusting like a Pro
1. Microfiber Cloths
They actually attract dust and are super absorbent, so you can get more out of each cloth. When I’m cleaning, I lightly dampen the cloth, but not enough that it’s wet because dust will then stick to surfaces. They dry pretty quickly, so you can use them over and over during the course of one house cleaning if you rinse and wring them out. Once you’re done, throw them in the wash and voila, good as new.
2. Top-to-Bottom Dusting
This is a no-brainer, but don’t let that antique shelf you’ve been ignoring catch your attention before you dust the ceiling fans or the top of that shelf first. All of your precious dusting work will be undone if you don’t adopt this top-to-bottom cleaning strategy.
3. Surfaces High and Hard to Reach + Light Fixtures
When it comes to house cleaning , if you need a ladder to reach it you’re less likely to clean it. With that said, keeping a regular dusting schedule for hard-to-reach surfaces is so important for keeping your house dust free. I’m talking ceiling fans, tops of doors, cabinets and the fridge, and everything else that has a top and is out of arms reach. An extendable, bendable microfiber duster will do the trick.
4. The Floors
Your floors are the biggest surface in your home. This is where all that dust eventually collects. Take your rugs outside and give them a good smack. If you are concerned with allergens, HEPA vacuums are the best for allergens and dust mites, and they don’t blow any dust back into the air. I always sweep and mop after I vacuum for good measure, and I do it once a week.
5. Blinds and Window Sills
For regular dusting for your blinds, you can use the brush head on the vacuum, but I really like the OXO Under Appliance Microfiber Duster. It’s super thin, perfect for getting into tight spaces, and it can be used for a number of deep cleaning purposes like dusting the teeny crevices on your kitchen appliances, inside your washer and dryer, and deep within your cabinets. It’s ahouse cleaning game changer. Window sills seem like a piece-of-cake compared to the blinds. Just use a damp microfiber cloth only after you’ve done the blinds.
6. Baseboards and Corners
While doing a deep cleaning of your home, the last thing you want to do is get down on the floor, especially before you’ve properly cleaned it. It’s also too hard on your body. So just like you use an extendable duster for high surfaces, use a similar cleaning tool for reaching the baseboards and corners. Make sure your microfiber cloth is just a tad damp. If you don’t have a good extendable duster, you can always use a mop, and cover the head with a microfiber cloth bound tightly with a rubber band.
7. Air Vents
Air vents are constantly pushing and filtering air, so these become natural hotspots for dust. Adopt this deep cleaning trick and add it to your regular maintenance routine. Attach the brush extension to your vacuum and go to town on every vent in the house. Your air quality will instantly improve, and less dust will be floating around. Don’t forget to do the bathroom air vent.
What makes couches and beds and cushy pillows the enemy of a clean home? They are porous dust collectors where dust doesn’t just sit on the surface but is absorbed too. Every week you should give your upholstery a good brush vacuum. And if you have pets, twice a week.
9. Under the Bed
Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Doing a good job is hard to do, and the smaller the space, the harder to clean. Everyone has their own way of dusting under the bed based on their cleaning resources. My all in one solution recommendation—a vacuum such as the Eureeka Mighty Mite Canister. The extended handle feature is super slim for low-hanging beds and small crevices under large furniture. It’s super suction technology really does a number on those dust bunnies. If you don’t have a vacuum equipped for this, try the extender on your regular vacuum for the bigger dust bunnies and then use a flat mop like a Swiffer and a damp cloth.
10. Leaving it to the Pros
Maintaining a clean and dust-free home takes time and discipline. The maintaining part is not all that hard once you have a good foundation. But it still takes time. Need some help getting started? Consider trying a deep cleaning service if your home hasn’t been properly cleaned in a few months or a standard house cleaning with Eastside LA Cleaners! We’re happy to take the load off!
